KANAGAWA, Japan– The 2024 Daihatsu Japan Open was the first Super 750 tournament to follow Paris, delivering thrilling matches and historic moments. Hosted in Yokohama this year, Team Yonex excelled across all five categories, achieving four first-time victories and a record-tying win in women’s singles.

 

 

The final day began with an electrifying men’s doubles match featuring Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin (MAS) against the 2023 World Champions, Seo Seung Jae and Kang Min Hyuk (KOR). The match was a display of intense rallies and strategic play, with Goh and Izzuddin showing exceptional momentum and resilience. They secured victory with a final score of 21-19, 21-15, marking their first win at a tournament above Super 750 and becoming the first Malaysian men’s doubles pair to win at the Japan Open in 22 years.

 

 

In the men’s singles final, Alex Lanier (FRA) was in pursuit of his first major career victory against Chou Tien Chen (TPE). Despite trailing by 7 points at 10-17 in the first game, Lanier staged an impressive comeback to take the lead, preventing Chou from scoring further. The match then turned into a tense battle, with both players exchanging defensive shots. Lanier’s unwavering focus and precision secured him the win with a final score of 21-17, 22-20, making him the first French player to claim a Japan Open title in any category.

 

 

The mixed doubles final featured the 2024 Indonesia Open champions, Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin (CHN), aiming for their third victory of the tour, against the 2024 German Open champions, Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet (HKG). Jiang and Wei dominated from the start, maintaining their momentum throughout the match. They secured their first Japan Open title in just 31 minutes with a decisive 21-12, 21-12 victory.

 

 

In the women’s doubles final, the World No. 3 pair Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning (CHN) faced the World No. 2 pair Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee (KOR). The match was a thrilling contest with frequent lead changes. Liu and Tan ultimately triumphed with a final score of 21-18, 22-20, claiming their first Japan Open title and marking their third victory of this year’s tour.

The final match of the day, the women’s singles, was the highlight for many Japanese fans. Akane Yamaguchi (JPN) went up against Busanan Ongbamrungphan (THA). With the home crowd cheering her on, Yamaguchi dominated the first game with her precise shots and skillful play. She maintained an aggressive approach throughout the game, securing her fourth Japan Open title with a decisive 21-11, 21-10 victory, and equaling the record for the most women’s singles titles at the tournament.
